Why do girls need Guides? Turn on any TV, scan the cover of any girls'
magazine, listen to the lyrics of a few popular sons and you'll understand
why.
From the time she's old enough to start school, a girl is already beginning
to absorb the negative messages the media sends: "You're not thin enough, popular
enough, pretty enough or flirtatious enough. You've got the wrong clothes,
the wrong makeup, the wrong cell phone, and you need a boyfriend." To
sum it up, what girls hear day in and day out is this: "You're just
not good enough."
Girls today face countless pressures: to be thin, to grow up faster, to wear
expensive clothes, to pretend to be something they’re not. The media does a
good job of serving up and reinforcing these stereotypes – they’re
everywhere you look, from TV to magazines to school hallways. We believe girls
